Teen Tech Centers and NM House Bill 71
Hello Friends and Parents of STEM Students,
We’ve received notice a few days ago that a bill (House Bill 71 – Teen Tech Center) for a project we’ve been a part of, has got a NM House Rep to sponsor it, and has made it in and out of committee and headed to the floor early this week for a vote.
This bill will allow the Department of Workforce Solutions to establish and manage $2M in appropriated funds to deploy 6 Teen Tech Centers in 6 communities throughout NM. The tentative locations identified are Manzano HS, Highland HS, Raton, Taos, Roswell and Alamogordo. This will be a great resource for our students and our mission with Applied Dynamics Initiative to get more kids involved in STEM.
We’re asking parents, teachers, mentors, coaches and those interested in providing more opportunity to NM students to please advocate for this bill.Being this will benefit our entire state you can reach out to as many as the representatives as you want listed below.
Below is a template for ideas to send an email and a list of representative contacts to call and/or send email messages to.
Thanks Russ & Isabel
TEMPLATE FOR EMAIL
(feel free to modify as see fit)
Dear [enter name of senator or representative]
SENTENCE 1: One or two sentences that tell about yourself
SENTENCE 2: I am writing to ask that you support two initiatives during the upcoming legislative session. The first is House Bill 71 (MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO THE WORKFORCE SOLUTIONS DEPARTMENT TO ESTABLISH AND ADMINISTER TEEN TECH CENTER PROGRAMS). This bill lays the groundwork for an innovative approach to engage and sustain teens’ interest in science and technology, preparing them to excel in the technology workforce of the future.
SENTENCE 3: The second initiative asks legislators to allocate a portion of their discretionary capital funds to establish a state-of-the-art Community Robotics Center at Manzano High School in Albuquerque. This facility will serve as a flagship and model for other schools and school districts to introduce robotics, computer science and other fields of technology to the activities offered to their students. This effort is being led by Representatives Akhil and Sarinana.
SENTENCE 4: Two or three sentences that express why computer science, robotics and STEM are important [EXAMPLE: I have participated in STEM programs. This has been a phenomenal learning experience, but equally important, I cannot think of another activity where I could have had more fun. This experience has inspired me to always be my best and put me on the path to soon enter college where I will study technology in preparation for a career in engineering research.]Sincerely
